Both sides of the heart have an atrium and a ventricle, however, the left side of the heart is thicker and stronger so it has a valve with only two cusps (bicuspid valve). The right side of the heart is not as strong and needs a valve with three cusps (tricuspid valve). Both valves are located between the atria and ventricles.

The right pumps blood to the lungs while the left pumps blood to the entire body. Because of this the left ventricle has a thicker muscular wall to create the high pressures needed to pump the blood to the body.

The Sinoatrial node, which paces the heartbeat, is found only on the right atrium near to the top. Additionally, the Atrioventricular node, which passes the heartbeat signal from the atria to the ventricles is found near the bottom of the right atrium.

There are many differences between the right and left sides of the heart including pressure, musculature, and size. The primary difference is that the blood on the left side of the heart is oxygen-rich, and on the right is oxygen-poor.
