A solstice is the point at which the tilt of the earth towards or away from the sun is at it's greatest. These actually occur when the Earth's orbit bring it closest to the sun. The winter solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere when the north pole is tilted farthest from the sun, on Dec. 21. The summer solstice is when the north pole is tilted closest to the sun, on June 21.

The Equinoxes in spring and autumn occur when the equator points directly at the sun and days and nights are 12 hours long, Equally.
