i dont know In case of magnetic storage, randomly distribuited tiny magnets present in the magnetic coating gets aligned according to the frequency and voltage levels of the information/data to be stored, thus leaving a magnetic signature of the information fed in electrical form. In case of optical storage bumps and pits are created on the medium to distinguish the variations in the signal to be stored with the help of laser beam. Depth and length of the pits corresponds to the change in information.

optical storage writes and retrieves data using a laser or similar. Magnetic storage uses a coating on a disc or tape to hold data, by manuplating the tiny ferrous elements on the surface it can store information.

A CD is optical storage. It has a series of lands and pits (ups and downs) - as the laser passes over these it converts them into 1s and 0s.

A DVD is an optical storage device, hence the lens used to read the disc. It cannot be overwritten. A video cassette, on the other hand, is a magnetic storage device. It can be rerecorded over.

Magnetic storage is magnetic. Don't know what you really want with that, but Optical storage in CD players use lasers to read data. Generally on Burned CDs a writer will actually burn the dye to be read as a 0 or 1 (binary on or off) the laser reads this data on the CD. In magnetic media such as a hard drive the magnet reads and writes (manipulates) data on a magnetic disk.

So in short the main difference is how the data is stored, accessed, and manipulated (by magnets or lasers.)

A magnetic disk - has a metal coating that stores the data by being written with a small magnet (similar to audio & video tape). An optical disk uses a laser to 'etch' the data onto the surface of a metal-coated glass disk (similar to a CD).

Is a hard disk magnetic or optical?

Magnetic storage is used on hard drives and floppy disks. Sectors of the disk are charged magnetically and are easily changed later. Optical storage uses a laser to read data. On a cd/dvd, the laser picks up tiny marks made starting in the center and rotating outward.

How is the Optical disc similar to the compact disc?

A compact disc is a type of optical disc. "Optical disc" is an umbrella term for any type of storage media which uses optical technology (as opposed to magnetic) for data storage. This includes but is not limited to DVDs, CDs, H-DVD, blu-ray, laser discs CDRW's, and DVDRW's

DVD-r DVD plus r?

DVD+R is a format for optical data storage. It is similar to, but incompatible with, the older DVD-R standard. A DVD+R is a write-once optical disc with 4.7 gigabytes (GB) of storage, generally used for non-volatile data storage or video applications.
