∙ 12y agoA and an are used when talking about something in general, while the is used when talking about a specific thing. The difference between a and an is that a is used before words with consonant sounds and an is used before words with vowel sounds.

∙ 13y agowell when you write a word that begins with a vowel, such as if you wanted to say a Englishman, you would say "an"Englishman. i dont know why however!
You use "an" instead of "a" to avoid the need to pause before saying the following word so people can understand you. It's also to avoid the "empty gap" that can be heard. Try saying "a Englishman" or "I ate a egg", and you'll see what I mean by "empty gap".
