What is the differences between a mesa and a plateau?

So there isn't much difference between the two other than a mesa is a hilll.

A plateau is a land area with a relatively level surface raised sharply above the adjacent terrain on at least one side. A mesa is surrounded on all sides by lower terrain. So a mesa is a form of plateau. A butte is smaller in size compared to a mesa.
