Majority means it is major, so there's more. Minority means it's minor, meaning there's less.
The patterns of interaction between majority and minority racial and ethnic groups varies between groups. Many majority groups will look down on minority groups as if they do not have equal rights.
An ethnic minority is an ethnic group that does not form a majority, or is not a subgroup of a larger ethnic group that forms the majority. An ethnic group is an identity based on common ancestry, language, religion, physical appearance and geography. Not all of those are required for an ethnic group, but some are. A minority is a group that does not form over 50% of the population, in a population where there is another group that does form over 50% of the population.
minorities refer to any ethic group in a country or area that is not the largest ethnic group. For instance, in the United States Caucasians (whites) are the majority ethnic group; while Blacks, Asians, Native Americans and so on are minorities, or minority ethnic groups. However a minority is not limited to being an ethnic group, for example left handed people are a minority in the world. However, usually when minorities are referenced in politics they do mean ethnic groups.
As of 2009, the state that was not a majority-minority state was Montana. In this context, a majority-minority state is defined as one in which more than 50% of the population identifies as a racial or ethnic minority. Montana's population at that time was predominantly white, making it one of the few states without a majority-minority demographic.
minority group
Since the member of the majority group has more power, the minority member may want to bond with him or her. Then, the majority may be more likely to help the minority person or a member of that group in the future.
Whites will become the minority sometime between 2040 and 2050. In 2011, ethnic births outnumbered white births (50.4%). For the first time in history, ethnic children are a majority and white children are a minority.
A minority group is a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their own lives than the members of a dominant or majority group have over theirs. The number of people in a group does not necessarily determine its status as a social minority. Sociologist define a minority group with the concern of the economic and political power, or powerlessness, of that group. An example of a minority group in America are homosexuals, or Muslims. Neither group is properly represented politically, or economically, and both groups have issues with certain rights such as the right to marry in some states for homosexuals. "Ethnic" which derives from the Greek word "ethnos" pertains to culture. An ethnic group is a cultural group. They are distinguished by language, customs, cuisine, modes of dress and so on. In most countries there is one dominant majority culture, and members of that group are an ethnic group to be sure. However, it is also common to find countries where there are minority ethnic groups, to whom the majority ethnic group often shows great hostility. Also in places like America, ethnic groups can be composed of several different minority groups. In our "melting pot" we have Black Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, and so on that all compose of one big ethnic group.
In apartheid South Africa, the majority ethnic group was the Black African population, which included various ethnic groups such as Zulu, Xhosa, and Sotho. The minority ethnic group was the white population, primarily of Dutch, British, and other European descent, who held political power and enforced the apartheid system. This system legally institutionalized racial segregation and discrimination against the majority Black population.
