A food chain refers to a single path that shows how animals get their food while a food web comprises of various food chains showing the interconnection between plants and animals in terms of getting food. The sun providing energy for grass, grasshoppers eating grass and frogs eating grasshoppers is a food chain. Insects and mice eating acorns from trees, snakes eating weasels and mice, and skunks and birds eating acorns and insects forms a food web.

A food web consists of many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem. It's basically more than one food chain coming together. An example could be a forest food chain again because a food web starts out with a food chain. The bear is the top again. The bear eats the coyote. The coyote ate the rabbit BUT it ALSO ate the bird. Then, because the coyote ate more than one animal, the foodchain splits creating a food web. The rabbit ate the grass and the bird ate the fruit and then it ends.

So the differences would be that a food chain is a single chain but a food web is more than one food chains put together.

There are many food chains within a food web, and one creature is not necessarily at the top of the hierarchy.
