Nearsighted eyes, or myopia is caused when the eyeball is too long. The light rays focus in front of the retina causing images at further distances to become blurry. The nearsighted person can see objects close to them well, but things like road signs and small writing may be difficult.
Farsightedness is called hyperopia. It is caused by the eyeball being too short. The light rays focus behind the retina causing all objects close to the person to become blurry. Farsighted people can only see things further away and objects up close are difficult to focus on.
