Becoming a veterinarian is much more difficult. It requires 4 years undergrad at a university then you must apply to veterinary school. To be competitive you need at least a 3.7 GPA which pretty much means almost all straight A's in very difficult classes like organic chemistry and anatomy. You also much have a minimum of 1600 hours experience in the veterinary field, whether working or volunteering (in both large and small animals). There are not a lot of vet schools. If you have a vet school in your state consider yourself lucky. The your chances of getting into a vet school where you are not a resident of that state is decreased.

Vet tech school only requires 2 years of studying at a certified college. Your grades don't need to be as high as vet school, although it is also a competitive field. Once you are in your second year you take the state boards. Once you pass you a a licensed veterinary technician.
