With HTML, you can create a horribly plain site. HTML itself will not create a dynamic site that gives text different font and color and enables people to sign in. Disadvantages of HTML are that it's very limited. At the heart of every site, even this site, there is HTML, but all that HTML is enclosed by huge amounts of CSS, PHP and much more. So ultimately, I'm just saying that HTML doesn't and can't do everything.

HTML or Hyper Texed Markup Language is not a programming language. It is a "language" that allows you to denote certain elements in the document such as Lists, Text, Paragraphs and Tables and is something that be interacted with beyond simple forms or links. HTML can be extended through a variety of programming languages or stylesheets to provide the simple Markup Language with interactivity or more creative and interesting design. HTML and XML are both markup languages. They must have beginning and ending tags denoting the specifics of an element and stand-alone they're very plain manners of displaying information.
