Folie a deux, or "madness of two" is a psychiatric syndrome that includes symptoms of psychosis and paranoid delusions that is transmitted from one partner (primary partner) to a second partner. The two individuals must be in a close, usually long term relationship. People who are often isolated from a community (residing in remote areas or being isolated due to a language barrier) are at greater risk of induced delusional disorder because these individuals have no sense of reality besides the partner who is already presenting the psychosis. Once the partners are separated the second partner will no longer present symptoms that will coincide with the illness, however the primary partner will require further treatment.
