Immaculate Conception. Title of the Blessed Virgin as sinless from her first moment of existence. In the words of Pope Pius IX's solemn definition, made in 1864, "The most holy Virgin Mary was, in the first moment of her conception, by a unique gift of grace and privilege of almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ the Redeemer of mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin." This means that since the first moment of her human existence the mother of Jesus was preserved from the common defect of estrangement from God, which humanity in general inherits from the sin of Adam. Her freedom from sin was an unmerited gift of God or special grace, and an exception to the law, or privilege, which no other created person has received.

You can not use The Bible to refute truths of the Catholic faith. The Bible was written, compiled, and guarded by the Catholic Church for 1,500 years to help It teach the truth to men. Christianity IS NOT Bible based, the Bible is based on the Church. The Church has taught that Mary was conceived without sin (the Immaculate Conception), lived her entire life without committing sin, ended her life without ever having committed sin. This has been the teaching of the Church since the very beginning, and taught. If you read Luke 1:26-28, you find Mary called "full of grace" (or highly favored in some protestant translations). The word used here is kecharitomene, which is the perfect passive participle of "charitoo" which means "endowed with grace." Charis (the Greek word for grace) is translated in the KJV as "grace" 129 times out of about 150 appearances. This passage teaches the sinlessness of Mary - itself the root assumption of the developed doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. extracted from Bible Proofs for Catholic Truths by Dave Armstrong, Sophia Institute Press, Manchester, NH, 2009

One of Pius' opponents at the Council was subsequently excommunicated.Catholic Answer:The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception was defined and declared by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854.
