You are a felon if the money or merchandise is over 300 three hundred dollars. Authorites can make up this amount in any number of ways. If something is stolen they may ask the victim to report how much it was worth or what they paid for it. One man was charged for supposedly taken a Timex watch that would not work they valued the item at 2,000.00 dollars.

None of this is true, actually. The truth (at least in the state of Colorado) is that anything under $1000 is a misdimeanor. A class 4 felony doesn't set in below that amount.
