If you have to file a Chapter 13, there is no down side. You do have to commit to up to 60 months of payments. You can't get anything on credit, like a new car, without the court's express permission. Tax refunds have to be turned over to the trustee (but may shorten the plan period).
There is no real "punishment"for not meeting the obligations of chapter 13 (which are usually pretty strict repayment plans). The negative side effect is that filing for bankruptcy will be on your credit report and your payment obligations will be due in full (rather than the reduced payment plans established by chapter 13) which can be very difficult.
I would guess that it would initially cause your credit score to go down a few points ... but look on the bright side -- you would be immediately and permanent OUT OF DEBT! I filed a Chapter 7 four years ago and already my FICO score is back in the 700s, and I have no problem getting credit cards, car loans, etc. All the money I used to put toward debt now goes into investments, and my future looks bright ...
