But sometimes, a dream can express our fears: the child crying could represent you, afraid and hoping someone will rescue you from whatever is frightening you in your life. Or, it could represent someone you have known who was in crisis and you wanted to help, but you were not able to do so, and you still feel guilty about it.
The part about calling out to the child -- you want to be the rescuer, you want to give the child courage and tell the child not to be afraid... but the child doesn't answer. This may reflect your fear that you may too late-- you try so hard to help others, but sometimes, you cannot, or sometimes you get there too late, when the problem is already too big to be solved. One other interpretation of the child not answering is a more positive one-- the child gained some inner strength and stopped being afraid, or someone else came along and helped the child. In either case, nothing you did was wrong and you tried your best.
