To 'know the drill' means that a person has practiced the steps or procedures involved in some process to the point that they are able to do it without any thought. The term 'drill' comes from close order drill, which means marching in ranks while performing turns, marching in place, changing step, and other actions.
Generally, a marching band first learns the music so as to memorize it before setting it to drill, that way the band can better focus on accurately hitting the formation without worrying about which notes to play. Setting drill comes next, usually accompanied by adding in horn moves. Once the music and drill are successfully memorized and combined, the band works on military perfection with the drill and bringing out the dynamics and articulations in the music.
To conduct a drill in JROTC, you typically follow a sequence of commands and movements in a precise manner. The drill instructor gives commands, such as "Attention," "About-Face," "Left Face," etc., and cadets carry out the corresponding movements. The key is to maintain discipline, coordination, and attention to detail while executing the drill movements. Practice and repetition are essential for developing and improving drill skills in JROTC.

Well, obviously a marching band will use a marching snare drum. Drill lines, that specialize in drums also use the marching snare drum. Any type of band that is going to be on the move will probably be using marching snare drums.
There are two purposes for the instruction of drill and ceremony. The first is that it is the most efficient way to move an element from point a to point b. The second is that it is the most effective way to condition the human mind to obey without questioning the command. Each command is comprised of a preparatory command and a command of execution. As soon as a preparatory command is given, the individuals in the element are preparing to execute the command upon receiving the command of execution. Not questioning the correctness of the command, they are wholly focused on immediate and perfect execution. In this way, the individual is conditioned to obey without thought; to act as a part of a larger whole.
the two type of command in COD are: the preparatory command ang command of execution! hope it can help ;)
