Typically, a "Drive cycle" is referred to in conjunction with clearing the Malfunction Indicator Light on the dashboard.

When the computer detects a fault, the MIL is turned on, warning the driver to have the vehicle serviced.

Once the problem is repaired, the computer should automatically turn off the MIL, but for some problems, the computer will continue to "store the code" for multiple "drive cycles".

In that context, a drive cycle consists of:

  • Start the engine
  • Drive the vehicle around a little bit, enough to warm up the engine.
  • Turn off the engine.
