Drive letters are merely an abstraction provided by the operating system to make it easier to identify specific hard drives. Indeed, the name "drive letter" is a actually a misnomer because it is the partitions upon the hard drive that are identified by those letters, not the hard drive itself. That is, a single hard drive may be divided into one or more partitions, each of which is assigned a drive letter. By default, drives a and b are reserved for floppy disk drives while the primary partition of the first hard drive is assigned drive letter C. Early versions of Windows had to be installed on partition C, however later versions could be installed on any partition.

Not all operating systems use drive letters which are predominantly a feature of Windows operating systems and DOS-based systems. Linux and other Unix-based systems use a more precise identifier whereby drives are identified by labels such as hda2, sdb1 or fda0. The first two letters are an acronym that describes the type of drive, such as hd (IDE hard-disk), sd (SATA drive or, generally, a SCSI drive) and fd (floppy drive). Physical drives of the same type are then labelled a, b, c and so on, and the partitions upon those drives are numbered 0, 1, 2 and so on. Thus the label "hda2" refers to the third partition of the first IDE hard-drive.

How are disk drives identified by a computer is it by numbers letters symbols or bytes?

The answer depends on what level you are talking about and what kind of computer you are talking about. A standard PC running a Microsoft Windows OS is going to identify the physical drives by numbers, starting with "drive 0". The physical drives can then be broken into virtual drives and assigned drive letters. You will usually be using letters to work with the drives. Bytes are the units that measure the capacity of the drive, so the bytes are not really used to identify the drive.

What is the L drive on a computer?

What's an A drive and a C drive?

The letter used by Windows XP (ie a, b, c, d, e etc) is essentially a reference. By default, letters 'a' and 'b' are floppy drives and drive 'c' is the hard drive that the operating systems (Windows XP in this case) is stored. The other letters are used whenever Windows XP detects another drive. if you have a CD/DVD drive in your computer it is liekly to be displayed as drive 'd'.
