During highway hypnosis, your mind can drift in and out of past real events, or into imaginary creative scenes. The mind detests being bored, and constantly generates images and stories to do or create something when there is no new sensory input. Even when drivers believe they are paying attention, their minds can drift while driving dozens to hundreds of miles during highway hypnosis. It is suggested that people can avoid slipping into this state by frequently shifting the eyes to check the rear view mirror, the road, the side mirrors, and to shift your attention from a short distance to longer distance and back to the road in front of you. Since highway hypnosis is involuntary, drivers need to be aware of it and do steps to prevent it from happening.
