Venus is the planet that is often called Earth's sister, though Venus bears no resemblance to our home planet, if you were to visit it. Venus is about 10 percent smaller than Earth and its surface has no ocean. In fact, life on Venus is impossible, since the atmosphere is 95 percent carbon dioxide at more than 90 times standard Earth barometric pressure and the greenhouse effect of this renders the average temperature to be more than 900 degrees. Even the few spacecraft that have landed on Venus, though built to withstand these conditions, were only functional for a few minutes before they succumbed to the severe environment.
