Reactive Dyed material have good fastness properties. The cost of the material is comparatively lower then the Vat dyed material and also varieties of shades are available in Reactive dyes.
Salt (usually NaCl) inrease the exhaustion i.e. increase the attraction between the dye molecule and the fabric. Usually dye (direct & reactive) molecules have negative charges and the fabric has also negative charge on its surface. Salt decreases the repulsion of negative-negative charges and hence improves exhaustion.
Cotton calico does not resist any kind of dye, I it does not resist the dye!
For a colorfast tie dye a fiber reactive dye is needed such as Procion Dye from the Dharma Trading Company. Rit dye can be used but is not fiber reactive and not colorfast and the tie dye will fade colors after each wash.

To dye red pants, start by choosing a fabric dye suitable for the material of the pants, such as fiber-reactive dye for cotton or synthetic dye for polyester. Prepare the dye according to the instructions, typically mixing it with water in a large container. Submerge the pants completely in the dye bath, stirring continuously to ensure even color distribution. After the desired shade is reached, rinse the pants in cold water until the water runs clear, then wash them separately in a washing machine to set the color.
The material used could be made of wool and the dye that can be used is Acid Dyes. In case the material is made of blends of wool and polyester, the dye to be used will be Acid Dye for wool and Disperse Dye for Polyester. In case the material is made of cotton, the dye is Vat Dye and if blends of cotton na polyester, the dye to be used will be Vat Dye and Disperse Dye.
A fiber reactive dye react with the material, is chemically linked to these fibers.
Cotton has a high affinity for dye molecules due to its porous and absorbent nature. The structure of cotton fibers allows dye molecules to penetrate deep into the fabric, resulting in vibrant and long-lasting colors. Additionally, cotton is able to hold dye well during the dyeing process, making it easy to achieve desired color results.
