Well if you follow the written aftercare guild you will be given and you get the piercing done by a professional body piercer in a licensed and inspected shop you should have no problems, the piercing will heal and you will be happy. However the biggest mistake is being lead down the wrong path for aftercare instructions and procedures Ultimately it's your body piercer who you should consult with and get aftercare guidance from, but situations occur and sometimes you cant reach your piercer so then you would need to count on your doctor for serious medical guidance if you develop and infection or complication. The best bet to ensure you are going to get a good piercing without possible problems down the road is to check out a few local studios, talk to the piercers and get any written info on aftercare and healing process etc. Keep in mind if at any time you feel you are being put off or they don't want to talk to you then take them off the list. Once you have got your choices narrowed down by doing the shop visit, don't for get to call the health unit and ask about complaints and commendations for the shops you are thinking of. It may sound like a bit of work but hey you only have an unpierced navel once, and you want it done right, and you want it to be trouble free. It will be worth the effort and you will develope a relationship with your piercer that may lead to happy piercings.

oh well currently I have a horrid scar on my belly button, where I used to have mine pierced. After like 7 months, It got infected! so I had to take it out. I decided to get it pierced a second time... Big mistake.. My body pushed the foreign object (jewelry) right out of my body... it just dropped out one day. Although all my friends got theirs pierced and theirs fine..for now that is. My advice, don't do it. My navel is now scarred for life. I hate going to the beach showing my scar off.......

Infections are the main concern, but these can be easily taken care of with proper cleaning or visiting you piercer. Another issue could be your body rejecting the piercing, although this is not very common. Any issue you do have with the piercing can be solved by asking your piercer and as long as you follow the procedures and keep it clean you shouldn't have a problem.
