Heat from the sun evaporates water. Uneven heating of the earth's surface causes wind to blow clouds up into the mountains. Rain falls on the mountains and makes its way down the mountain into streams which fill the lake behind a dam.
The energy is called Hydrothermal energy. Its called that because Hydro means water and a dam holds water.
Potential energy
What kind of potential energy?
The name or a dam could be hydro power or hydro electric.
It is potential energy. As the water loses height it gains speed, thus converting the potential energy into kinetic energy.
Potential gravitational energy

Gravitational potential energy.

Water is stored behind a dam and possesses potential energy. When it is released and made to run down conduits down the dam to turn turbines the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy which in turn is converted to electrical energy.
That depends on whether the water is in motion. Water coming from a fire hose certainly packs a lot of kinetic energy. Water held in a reservoir behind a dam represents a lot of potential energy but no kinetic.
A dam does not transform mechanical energy from the motion of water into electrical energy. A turbine can convert the kinetic energy of moving water, coming from a dam, a river, or anywhere, into mechanical energy, which a generator then takes to convert that into electrical energy.
A mass of moving water represents potential energy. Consider tidal flow.If the water is entrained behind a dam, then it may be converted into electrical energy - otherwise known as Hydro Energy or Hydroelecticity
Potential Energy
Water stored behind a dam is an example of potential energy (energy of position). As the water flows through the dam, some of the water's potential energy is converted into kinetic energy (energy of motion), which is typically further converted into electrical energy through the use of spinning magnets and coils of wire.

Potential energy is the state of matter in which it is not at rest, or at its lowest state. A charged battery has potential energy, as does the water behind an hydro dam.
Any dam will raise the water level behind it.

The potential energy in this system is the column of water stored behind the dam. This water has the potential to have its energy turned into electric power.
There is no such thing as "hydrogwe" energy. However "hydroelectric" energy is electricity generated from falling water (such as that held behind a dam.
Because it isn't moving...... COMMON SENSE DUDE!
It holds water behind it as potential energy. The difference in the pressure of the water between the reservoir and the turbine outlet make power. Some dams pump water back up behind the dam when power consumption is low.
Building a dam results in a body of water behind the dam and an area of dry land in front of the dam. The body of water behind the dam can be seeded with fish for sports or a food source (pisciculture). The water can be used as a reservoir for drinking water or as an entertainment area. The dry area in front of the dam can be used for living space and agriculture. The dam itself can be constructed, as many dams are, to use the stored energy in the water to generate electricity.
