Germanium had been known about in the scientific world since the 1930's but purity and manufacturing abilities made it's use commercially unviable until the early 60's. A variety of limitations allowed Silicon to become the more robust and popular element in semiconducter manufacture. Today other elements are showing promise and no doubt will appear in the fullness of time.
