MAJOR SPOILER!! At the end of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), while looking for Shmuel's father Bruno and Shmuel are huddled with a group of men in a barrack. Rain begins to fall. They are told they are going home soon, and go underground; to which Bruno believes they are getting out of the rain. The prisoners are ordered to strip, (this is very non-explicit) and are shoved in a metal room. Other prisoners (known as sonderkommandos) reassure them, "It's just a shower"
A sonderkommando then shuts the door and a Nazi with a gas mask pours some of the poison (Known as "Zyklon B") into it.

Bruno's father is barely there in time to save the two, and he knows what happens. You can hear smoke crackling towards the end, signifying that they burned the bodies. Elsa screams her son's name while Gretel stares in awe. The film closes with the changing room, and the prisoner's uniforms waiting for the cycle to happen again.

At the end of the book, when everyone is led in the room, Bruno thinks this is to protect them from the rain. However, from the commotion in the room and how Bruno was never seen again, we can assume that the room was a gas chamber and that everyone in it was killed.

In the end, both boys die looking for Shumuel's father. They both die of suffocation in a gas chamber.

I think maybe the author was trying to say, "The Holocaust hurt everyone and we do NOT want to have another one EVER." Do we seriously want another massacre? What did any of those people do to really seserve what they got?

You may think, "Oh, I would never do that" but, what do you do in everyday life? Do you not like someone because they are blind, deaf, black, etc.? What did they ever do to you? Even if they did hurt you, or spread a rumor about you, would you seriously be mean back?

We can learn from our history. If history is not forgotten, it is less likely to be repeated.

Bruno crawls under the fence with a striped pyjama he got from The little Jewish boy, they were looking for the Jewish boy's dad. Then they got surrounded by soldiers, and they took them and a big group of others to a big metal room. There they thought they were there because of the rain.

(...)

Without anything between these parts:

The mother of Bruno was worried because Bruno didn't come back, and they've never found Bruno again, except for his clothes that he left behind at the fence.

John Boyne probably ended the novel to open up people's eyes, that it's not funny. (although some parts, Bruno's sarcasm is)

The movie ended because the book did.
