This hypothesis is thought to be possible because it is known today from scientific observation that transfer of DNA occurs between bacteria species, even if they are not closely related. Bacteria can take up DNA from their surroundings and have a limited ability to incorporate it into their own genome. .......EDIT.........

The transfer of DNA from one bacteria to another is called bacterial transformation. It has nothing to do with the theory of autogenesis. The autogenic hypothesis postulates that the organelles in eukaryotic cells were formed from the enfolding of the cell membrane in prokaryotes. Considering that in order for the prokaryotic cell to grow larger, it had to increase its surface area, the enfolding of the membrane would accomplish that. The hypothesis does not explain the origin of mitochondria or chloroplasts, which contain DNA and ribosomes genetically separate from the host cell. The endosymbiotic theory was proposed by Lynn Margulis and describes a process of symbiotic development beginning with the phagocytosis of one prokaryote by another. Most recently, Dr. David Baum has published a paper in BMC Biology that merges these two hypotheses based on his observation of small protrusions called "blebs" that form in certain strains of archaea. On a sub note...if you are looking for answers to scientific questions, don't accept the first explanation that you come across. Use reliable sources such as University websites. Always cross check the information, especially when you have no idea what the answer is.
