Exposition is the beginning part of a story where important background information is given to the audience, such as setting, characters, and the initial situation. It sets the stage for the main events of the story to unfold.

In the most general sense exposition is all the explaining. Usually when we talk of exposition we are refering to excessive exposition - the author doing to much to explain the setting or character back story or cultural complexities that are involved in his story.

Some exposition is necessary and even enjoyable but to much is simply boring and runs the risk of having the reader abandon the book.
