she never gave her a fake name
Anne Frank was arrested on 4th August 1944. Soon after arrest, Miep Gies found her diary and kept it. In July 1945 when Anne died, Miep decided to give the diary to her father Otto Frank. Miep Gies, who has been keeping diary, died earlier this year.
Miep and Bep Voskuijl both were well aware that Anne was a writer - she was constantly asking them to scrounge leftover paper for her to write on. During the arrest, the rooms of the Annex were all "turned upside down" and when she and Bep went up to see what was left, the first thing she noticed was Anne's diary and loose pages laying all over the floor. She gathered up all she could carry, and stored them in her desk, intending to give them to Anne when she returned. She instead, of course, gave them later to Otto Frank.
Rescued by Miep Gies after those in the annex had been taken away, she stored it - unread - in her desk drawer until the war was over. She had intended to give it to Anne upon her return, but had to give it to Otto instead.
Mr. Frank is initially hesitant when Miep gives him Anne's diary, but after reading a passage he is moved to tears and decides to have it published as a way to honor Anne's memory and share her story with the world.

Anne Frank received her diary in 1942, and wrote in it - and a succession of other diaries - until August 1, 1944. On August 4th, they were arrested, and immediately after the arrest, Miep Gies gathered up Anne's diary and put it - unread - in a drawer of her desk, intending to give it back to Anne after the war. When Anne did not come back, she gave it instead to Otto.
Anne Frank writes on 13 June 1944, one day after her 15th birthday: I received quite a few gifts: Springer's five-volume art history book, a set of underwear, two belts, a handkerchief, two pots of yoghurt, a pot of jam, two honey biscuits (small), a botany book from father and mother, a gold bracelet from Margot, a sticker album from the van Daans, Biomalt and sweetpeas from Dussel, sweets from Miep, sweets and an exercise book from Bep, and the high point: the book Maria Theresia and three slices of full-cream cheese from Mr Kugler. Peter gave me a lovely bouquet of peonies.
The moral is never give up.
