DRS ABC Danger - Always check for signs of danger to yourself, bystanders and the casualty. Is it safe to approach the casualty? Make sure you do not put yourself in danger when going to the assistance of another person. If it is too dangerous for you to approach then keep yourself and others back and dial 999. If it is to approach them the do so cautiously. Response - Are the conscious? Do they reply to your questions? Do they respond to pain stimulus when you pinch their earlobe? Shout - Shout loudly for assistance so that anyone else who may be in the vicinity can hear you. You may need help in tending to the casualty and calling for the emergency services. Airway - Check the casualty's airway. If the person is responding, they are conscious and their airway is clear, assess how you can help them with any injury. If the person is not responding and they are unconscious, you need to check their airway by opening their mouth and having a look inside. If their mouth is clear, tilt their head gently back by lifting their chin and check for breathing. If the mouth is not clear, place the person on their side, open their mouth and clear the contents, then lie them back on their back, tilt the head back and check for breathing. Breathing - Rest the side of your face by the casualty's face for at least 10 seconds to see if you can feel their breath on your face. Listen for their breathing also and look at their chest to see if you can see it moving up and down, also indicating that someone is breathing. CPR - If you cannot feel them breathing then proceed with CPR. Give 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 per minute (about the speed of the song 'Staying alive'), and continue until the ambulance arrives and the paramedics take over or until the casualty starts to breathe on their own. If the casualty does start to breathe on their own then proceed to put them in the recovery position. Recovery position:- 1) Remove any objects from the casualty's pockets such as mobile, keys, wallet, etc so that they don't di gin to the casualty when you lie them on their side and cause more injury. 2) Straighten the casualty up. 3) Take hold of the arm that is closest to you and tuck it under the casualty's body. 4) Take hold of the other hand and place the back of this hand on the back of the opposite cheek, holding it in place i.e if you are on the casualty's left side then rest the back of their right hand on their left cheek, holding it in place with your right hand and vice versa if you are on their other side. 5) Using your left hand pull their right leg up with their right foot just at the side of their left knee or vice versa if on the other side, keeping your hand on the knee. If they are wearing trousers then use these to help you. Get a grip of the trouser leg and use it to aid you. 6) Gently roll the casualty towards you. Get a bystander if possible to help you if you struggle. 7) Roll the casualty so that they are lying, partly on their front, making sure that the back is straight. 8) Straighten the casualty's leg and arm, keeping the hand that is on the cheek where it is and the leg that us used to roll them bent at a right angle. 9) Gently tilt the head back with the mouth open to keep the airway clear. 10) Stay with the casualty and keep a regular check on them to make sure they don't stop breathing. If they do then repeat the process again until the paramedics arrive / they breathe on their own again.
