A:Any of several books could be the earliest book of the New Testament.
  • The Book of Hebrews was very possibly the first book of New Testament to be written,as its theology is relatively primitive and it makes no specific mention of Jesus as the historical Jesus of Nazarus.

  • The General Epistle of James could be substantially pre-Christian, or at least proto-Christian. Its teaching is not about the Christian faith, but about the importance of living a moral life, and the arguments for doing so are set forth as common wisdom.

  • Another contender is 1 Thessalonians, probably the earliest book by Paul, although a few scholars think it may have been written in Paul's name after his death.

Mark was the earliest of the gospels but, written approximately 70 CE, is undoubtedly later than any of Paul's epistles.

The Bible is 'divided' into two sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament, so you will need the second half, first Gospel entitled, The Gospel According to St. Matthew

James wrote his general epistle probably as early as 50 AD. It is therefore the earliest NT writing.
