We don't know who first saw the planet Mercury. Mercury can be seen with the naked eye, and it was known to ancients. It is a sure bet that when prehistoric people looked up at certain times, they saw Mercury (tho' they didn't know what it was at the time. There were ancients who recognized it as a "night visitor" that sort of looked like stars, but was brighter and did not move the same way the rest of the stars moved. Certainly they suspected something, but didn't have the tools to go far with it.
