adding -ist behind the instrument is just the general way of how things are done, for example people who play piano are called pianists, guitar players are guitarists, bass players are bassists etc.
Generally, they could be called a "musician". Or for example: a "guitarist" plays a guitar. A "pianist" plays a piano. An "organist" plays the organ. A "violinist" plays the violin. A "harpist" plays the harp. A "drummer" plays the drums! An example now: "South Jersey's premier musician, Darin Geltzer, is one heck of a guitarist!"
