The type pf government that is in place in the UK is a coalition government. This is a combination of two political parties as there was not a majority vote in the general election.
The election of 1800 was important to the new government. Federalists and Republicans accuse each other of wishing to destroy the constitution yet both parties accepted the results of the election. For the first time in recent history the control of government was given to new leaders as the result electoral "Revolution" rather than hereditary successions.
Political parties didn't exist in1796. They really hadn't formed, but there were political fractions concerning how government should be run.
