Well, there is a generally accepted format. You draw several boxes on the piece of paper, just large enough to fit whatever you are drawing. Comics such as Calvin and Hobbes usually have square boxes, whereas comics such as Superman have more irregular ones. Speech is often layered in bubbles connected to the person talking.
