8 bits = 1 byte

1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte

1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte

1024 megabyte = 1 gigabyte

1024 gigabyte = 1 terabyte

(Remember Network speeds are calculated in bits that is kilobits or megabits so divide with 8 to calculate in bytes that is megabytes and kilobytes)

The above one is in theory, but hard disk manufacturers use the factor 1000 instead of 1024. And windows read it with a factor of 1024 (I am not sure about mac).

so say you have an hard disk of 500 GB, your windows will show the total space less than 500 GB due to difference in calculating factor.
