It is noteworthy that although frites are the most popular way of eating potatoes in France, the French are always willing to give credit to the Belgians for them. On the other hand, the French have no desire to take credit for "French Toast". They did not invent it, or name it, they do not eat it and there is no word for it in French, except possibly 'degeu'. It probably came from the USA, but no-one there wants to take the blame credit for it either.
