Your 1958 Johnson uses a 24 to 1 mixture.
The manufacturer recommends 50:1 mixture roughly 16 oz for 6 gallons
It depends what year. The older ones use 24:1.
I have a 6 hp Johnson seahorse outboard and I was told to run it at 40:1 and have done so for ages and runs fine.
Johnson engines from 1964 on are a 50/1 mixture requirement. Before '64 they were 24-25/1 mixture. Quite revolutionary of Johnson/Evinrude at the time, changed the industry, everyone followed suit shortly after.
Johnson outboards manufactured prior to 1965, require a 24:1 ratio. The later models use a 50:1 mix.
