The controller card, or simply "controller," is a piece of hardware that acts as the interface between the motherboard and the other components of the computer. For example, hard drives, optical drives, printers, keyboards, and mice all require controllers to work. Most computers have all the necessary controllers built in the motherboard as chips, not full-sized cards. However, if you add additional components such as a SCSI hard drive, you may need to add a controller card as well. Controller cards are typically installed in one of the computer's PCI slots.

∙ 7y agoAn IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) is the controlling interface for the hard disc or optical drive (CD ROM etc.). The controller was integrated (hence the name) into the hard disc unit rather than being mounted on the computers motherboard. The first IDE units appeared in 1986 and has been replaced by the ATAPI (SATA) drives today.

IDE is most commonly used for hard drives and CD or DVD drives, but has also been used for tape drives and zip drives. An IDE controller is the primary interface (usually integrated into the motherboard) which any IDE devices will be plugged into. It handles the flow of data to and from these devices. It usually consists of two connections (known as IDE channels) both of which can handle up to 2 devices each. It is also possible to add more IDE controllers in the form of PCI or PCI-E cards, these are usually referred to as IDE controller cards. This is often done to enable more storage devices to be installed into the system, but may also be done to replace an obsolete or malfuntioning on-board IDE controller.
