An eyelid is a thin fold of skin that covers and protects an eye. With the exception of the prepuce and the labia minora, it has the thinnest skin of the whole body. The levator palpebrae superioris muscle retracts the eyelid to "open" the eye. This can be either voluntarily or involuntarily. The human eyelid features a row of eyelashes which serve to heighten the protection of the eye from dust and foreign debris. "Palpebral" (and "blepharo") means relating to the eyelids.
I'm pretty sure that it like wets the eye ball and removes it of like dirt...I'm assuming because if you don't blink, your eyes dry out and when you blink your eyes water.

It is extremely important that the front surface of the eyeball and cornea remain moist. Our eyelids perform this all-important task for us. And when we are sleeping, they cover our eyes help prevent evaporation. Normally the eyelids of human eyes close by reflex action about every six seconds, but if dust reaches the surface of the eye and is not washed away, the eyelids blink more often and more tears are produced. The Meibomian glands, a set of small glands, located on the edges of the eyelids, produce a fatty secretion that lubricates the eyelids and the eyelashes. The eyelids also protect our eyes from injuries caused by foreign bodies through the process of blinking. The eyelashes, a fringe of short hairs growing on the edge of either eyelid, act as a screen to keep dust particles and insects out of the eyes when the eyelids are partly closed.

∙ 10y agoLacrimal glands are situated on lateral and upper aspect of your eyes. They keep the eyes constantly wet and there by protect the eyes, specially cornea. It flows from lateral to medial side of your eyes to enter the naso-lacrimal duct. They physically wash the foreign particles and bacteria and also contain a bacterio-static substances in them.

What system is the nictitating membrane in?
The nictating membrane is a clear eyelid deployed over the eye to protect it while swimming. Basically, the same thing as us humans using swimming goggles.
