It has two main functions in a generator - firstly, it transfers the electrical energy from the (moving) armature coils to the (stationary) external electrical load circuit. The brushes are made of graphite, with a tiny trace of copper in it, so they're self-lubricating where they ruib on the copper commutator bars (those copper strips on the armature that the coil ends connect to).
Secondly, the electricity generated in the rotating armature coils is alternating current, and the brushes, working with the commutator acts like a switch to reverse the connections between the coil ends and the external circuit when the alternating voltage reverses its polarity (+ and -) to give direct current in the external circuit.

The main function of the brush is to collect the converted form of voltage from the commutator. They are also made of different materials
The brushes will act as a inverter in case of dc motor, as the armature coil needs ac. Incase of generator mode the same brushes will be acts as converter/rectifier.
Pigtail is a device to protect the brush from sparking
A brush-less DC motor (BLDC)
In the operation of a standard generator, the exciter rotor and stator provide DC-type energy to an AC-type supply. This allows the exciter to maintain a constant DC source.
By the operation supply 1.AC generator 2.DC generator In DC generator we are having the following types according to the construction 1.DC Series Generator 2.DC shunt Generator 3.DC Compound Generator
DC generator is used to produce direct current. The basic DC generator have four basic parts 1. A magnetic field 2. A single conductor or loop 3. A commutator 4. Brushes

There are two types me dc generator 1 separately excited dc generator 2 self excited dc generator
If the commutator is removed from your generator, you (if you connect slip rings) get AC supply instead of DC supply. the function of the commutator is to convert AC to DC supply and vice versa.Additional AnswerRemoving the commutator will also prevent you from connecting the output of the generator to its load. Remember, the generator's armature is spinning!
An ac generator produces ac, a dc generator produces dc, it all depends on the generator.

In construction, dc machine (either generation or motor) consists of 4 parts mainly.. 1: Field Magnets 2:Armature 3:Commutator 4:Brush & brush gear.
A DC generator is a DC machine that is driven by an external rotating force. It is constructed the same as a DC motor.

what is necessity of commutator in DC generator
Turn the DC generator inside out and you have an alternator .
