The septum separates the 2 sides of the heart. It prevents blood from crossing one side of the heart to the other. In addition, because it is made from muscular tissue, helps with the pumping action of the heart.

the purpose of the septum is to separate the left and right side of the heart. This is so the oxygenated blood doesn't mix with the deoxygenated blood. With out the septum the heart would not distribute blood with enough oxygen that we need for our body.
