The term "gastrulation" refers to an early stage of development when the single cell that life begins from, the blastula, does not develop correctly. This may cause a loss of symmetry (amongst other things) which then leads to the development of spina bifida.
Gastrulation is defined as a phase early in the embryonic development of most animals, during which the single-layered blastula is reorganized into a trilaminar structure known as the gastrula. These three germ layers are known as the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. These develop into the respiratory and digestive organs.
During embryonic development, the process of gastrulation occurs first. This is when the three primary germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm) form, from which all tissues and organs will develop. Following gastrulation, organogenesis begins where specific organs and structures start to form.
Fertilization: The egg is fertilized by a sperm to form a zygote. Cleavage: The zygote undergoes cleavage divisions to form a blastula. Gastrulation: The blastula undergoes gastrulation, forming the three germ layers: ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. Mesoderm formation: During gastrulation, cells from the blastula migrate and differentiate into mesoderm, giving rise to tissues such as muscle, bone, and blood.
