Turtles are of the Order Testudines (turtles, tortoises and terrapins) Within that Order there are eleven different Families of turtles. Within each Family there is one or more Genus's.
The word Genus means species. It is not a particular type of turtle. The earliest known turtles were discovered 220 million years ago.
There are more than 250 different turtle species out of which forty species of turtles are endangered. Here are the four of the most popular species : 1. Box Turtles (Genus Terrapene ornata ornata), 2. Sliders (Genus Trachemys), 3. Mud Turtles (Genus Kinosternon and Sternotherus) and 4.Painted Turtles (Genus Chrysemys). First two are the terrestrial turtles and the last two are Aquatic Turtles.
The genus name for the koala is Phascolarctos.
Genus. Genus is a group animals having common characteristics. The second name is the species name. For eg: Panthera Tigris is the biological name of tiger. Panthera is the genus and Tigris is the species.

Graptemys is a genus of turtles known commonly as map turtles or sometimes sawback turtles. They are aquatic, freshwater basking turtles that are found throughout the eastern half United States and into southern Canada. They superficially resemble many other species of aquatic turtle, including sliders (genus Trachemys) and cooters (genus Pseudemys), but are distinguished by a keel that runs the length of the center of their carapace, and that they don't typically grow as large. The name map turtle is given to them because of the pattern of yellow or cream colored markings on their head, neck and legs which appears to be similar to contours or markings on a road map.
Karl Genus's birth name is Genus Carl Benson.
