The largest trees in the world by volume are only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. They are the giant sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum. Most are protected now, and located in the Giant Sequoia National Monument. A relative of this giant are the Sequoiadendron sempervirons, commonly known as Coast Redwoods. This species are taller (up to 115.2 meters or 378.1 feet, and counting) than the Giant Sequoia but still do not equal their mass.
