∙ 13y agoTo use the hardness scale see is a mineral can scratch another, if it scratches the mineral then it is harder if it doesn't then it is not harder.
also the first test on the mineral scale is if your fingernail will scratch it then you wld see if a penny would scratch it easily anfter you would see if a steel nail would scrardh it. if none of those scratch the mineral easily you would see if it scratches glass.

∙ 13y agoa minerals hardness is determined by what is called a "scratch test", what you do is take something sharp and pionty (be careful though) like a finger nail, or just a nail or screw and scratch the rock, mineral, or crystal if you stay on this site and look up the minerals hradness scale you'll find more information.
