There are ways to protect astronauts and cosmonauts from radiation, but shielding is very heavy and for every pound of material placed into orbit, it cost several thousand dollars. So a balance has to be reached: cost/benefit.
Weightlessness for a short duration flight won't cause too many problems, but for long duration flights, weightlessness can cause a loss of bone mass and excessive atrophy (wasting) of many of the muscles.
