The Himalayas are currently the tallest mountain range, but they're also extremely young, and have not existed for most of the history of the Earth.
I don't definitively know what the tallest mountain range ever on Earth would be, but I do know that the Appalachian range has been consistently above water for about 400 million years (very few places on Earth can make this claim), and was taller than the Himalayas at its peak height.
A professional geologist interested in orogenies would definitely know this, as well as anyone can.
