The highest point on the Austalian mainland is Mt Kosciuszko. Named by explorer Paul Edmund de Strzelecki after a Polish patriot, Kosciuszko is located in the Australian Alps, in southern New South Wales.

Whilst Australia's highest mainland mountain is Kosciuszko, Mawson Peak on the Australian external territory of Heard Island is higher, at 2745 m.

However, the highest town with permanent inhabitants is Cabramurra, which was purpose-built for the workers of the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, and still services the workers today. Cabramurra has an elevation of 1488m. Cabramurra is situated about 20km off the Snowy mountains highway, not far from Kiandra.
