The Leaning tower of Pisa was not meant to lean but as the foundations were not strong enough it began to lean as it was constructed (as they built it they tried, unsuccessfully, to correct the problem). It was built as a bell tower for the nearby church to try and out do other Italian city states where towers and domes were the way you got your city noticed.

Some guy got drunk and built a tower for the laughs, ended up with a leaning one that became pretty famous.
