Historically, naval warfare's traditional sea battles have been fought, won, and lost by traditional "men 'o war"...that is to say...the "Battleship." There were WOODEN battleship's powered by cloth sails which were driven by the wind at Trafalgar in 1805. There were steel battleship's powered by coal fuelled engines at Tsushima in 1905. There cruiser fleet actions fought at the Java Sea in 1942...these were all SURFACE actions with warships fighting one another. 1. Midway was history's first decisive sea battle fought with aircraft carriers fighting aircraft carriers. (Coral Sea was history's FIRST carrier to carrier sea battle; but it was NOT a decisive sea battle). 2. Midway was a decisive sea battle. It altered the course of the war by allowing the USN to have the fighting edge from every sea battle onward. Without crack pilots/and aircrewmen (crack=a 20th century military term meaning experienced & excellent fighting men/for example: a "Crack Regiment", or "Crack Tank Crew", etc.) to engage US airmen, less trained IJN airmen were no match in future aerial combat engagements. As would be evident during the "Mariannas Turkey Shoot" in 1944.
